The Virtual Mathomat
This on-screen version of the physical Mathomat:
- Gives teachers the ability to introduce lessons using the physical Mathomat on the electronic whiteboard.
- Engages students (at home or in classrooms) with computer based introductions to hands on challenges with their physical Mathomat template.
Encourages whole class discussion of the mathematics that is being explored with the hands on Mathomat.
- Allows for a seamless transfer between hands on and computer based learning, to give teachers the ability to make full use of all available classroom technologies.
The Virtual Mathomat drawing software environment
The Mathomat template appears on screen and acts as a pallet of shapes. Mathomat shapes can be selected and transformed on screen. Includes detailed instructions on-screen. All basic transformation processes are available (slide, dilate, flip, rotate). A special nudge function is available for precision grouping of shapes for tessellations and net construction. A mirror can be selected for creation of interesting teessellations.
Explore Mathematics
In this area of the program there are four interactive lesson plans that will draw out the methametics that is being explored hands-on using the physical Mathomat. These lesson plans cover:
- An introduction to the Mathomat template.
- Tessellations with Mathomat.
- Navigation using Mathomat.
- More Mthematics (a collection of useful hands on skills with Mathomat presented and explained interactively)
These lesson plans use engaging and dynamic graphics which can be used:
- By teachers to introduce, and draw out the mathematics in the physical Mathomat investigations in a powerful and dynamic way.
- Students at home to explore the mathematics that their physical Mathomat has engaged them in.
- To take the mathematics that is being explored with the physical Mathomat further by developing it on screen in a virtual environment.
